Celebrating Music since 1960

Our Story & Values

The Solent Male Voice Choir was founded over 60 years ago by a dedicated group of postmen. Our choir has grown to include over 30 male members from all backgrounds and ages, who share a passion for singing.

We believe in the joy of music and the power of traditional four-part male vocal harmony, performing in four to six concerts annually for our community.

About our structure

The administration of our choir is structured as a charity, overseen by a dedicated committee that manages the day-to-day operations. This committee is not only responsible for the choir’s activities but also serve as trustees, ensuring that we adhere to our charitable objectives while fostering a vibrant musical community. Members of the committee are elected annually during our Annual General Meeting (AGM), allowing for fresh ideas and perspectives to shape our choir's future.

In addition to the committee, we have section leaders for Tenor 1, Tenor2, Baritones, and Basses, who play a crucial role in guiding their respective sections and ensuring high standards.

Our Musical Director, Huw Thomas, is responsible for the selection of music, bringing a wealth of experience and passion to the role. Huw collaborates closely with the accompanist and other members of the choir to curate a diverse repertoire that challenges and inspires our choristers. Under the Musical Director's guidance, we strive to deliver compelling performances that resonate with both our audience and ourselves.

The Solent Male Voice Choir is committed to equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion within our choir community and beyond. We aim for our performances, membership, community work, procedures, management and decision-making processes to be accessible to, and inclusive of everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, life-style, sexuality, physical/mental disability, offending background or any other factor. We actively oppose discrimination, harassment and bullying in all its forms.

The policy applies to everyone involved with the choir, singers, music professionals and supporters, and everyone has an individual responsibility to uphold these standards.
